Whistler Village Access for people with Disabilities

Whistler VillageLike many other communities Whistler Village is striving to adapt and grow with the needs of the disabled.

It is a long road but Whistler has made progress and by the time the 2010 Paralympics are under way the Resort should have all it's Transit Buses (WAVE) Wheel Chair Accessible.

Taxi Companies are starting to acquire Wheel Chair accessible Vans. So getting around the Village should not be a big problem.

Village Map for locations.

Hotels and Condo's listed in the
Accessible Accommodations section are acquiring new equipment and modifying rooms to fit all your needs. If your Accommodations are located around the Village you should be fine to move around on your own without public or private transport.

Resort Municipality of Whistler (RMOW) Accessibility

Whistler Public LibrarySaturday, January 26, 2008 became a memorable day in the history of Whistler. The new Whistler Public Library opened to the public on that day and a new era has begun for this vital and well loved community service. For decades, the Library has operated out of portable trailers and, despite the modest facility, Whistler's library has been one of the most well used in British Columbia, on a per capita basis. In addition to the book, audio / video lending services, storytelling and reading functions of a typical library, the Whistler library provides a link to home for the many visitors and short term workers that come to Whistler from around the world.

The new library will provide a comfortable, accessible base for locals and visitors. A covered parking area will have accessible parking spaces. The adjacent elevator will lead to the library collection, the fireplace reading room, the library plaza and to the Village. An accessible computer workstation and accessible washrooms will be available and the municipality is seeking to add a full function TTY telephone.

February 2008 will be notable as Whistler launches some new communication tools. An information kiosk in Village Square will feature maps, video insights, web cam images, event listings and more. A podcast, self guided Village tour will also be launched and linked to key map locations. The podcast, the maps and associated brochure will show the barrier free routes, accessible washrooms and provide some insight into life in Whistler. For more news from the Resort Municipality of Whistler please visit them at www.whistler.ca/access.

The Resort Municipality of Whistler (RMOW) has been busy addressing accessibility and infrastructure for the Resort. New signs for accessible routes in the village have just been added - look for them on your next visit.
